Private Henry Turnbull, 1/7th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Denny & Dunipace, Falkirk, The 25 April 1915, is a day that brought catastrophe to 7th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and to the towns and villages of Falkirk District. The 7th Battalion were seen as Falkirk District’s Battalion. The men were all serving Territorials, work mates and friends.

James Thomson
Sapper James Thomson, 74th Field Company, Royal Engineers. The 74th Field Company were involved in the opening phase of Third Ypres when the 15th (Scottish) Division attacked Frezenberg Ridge. One section of the 74th was allocated to the 45th Brigade which was tasked with taking and consolidating the Green Line. They dug posts at the Bremen Redoubt located behind the Green Line. The War Diary records the Company casualties as one other rank killed and four wounded.

Edward Sinclair
Private Edward Sinclair, 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, Denny & Dunipace, Falkirk, The Falkirk Herald reported that his letters from the front were of a cheerful, optimistic tone and that he wrote of being at home for Christmas. They reported that one of his letters had been written on paper he had found and that it contained, on the reverse, some words in French that were from a French soldier to his sweetheart.

James Miller
Private James Miller, Gordon Highlanders, Denny & Dunipace, At the beginning of the day on the 11 April the 4th Gordons were in a defensive position on the La Bassee Canal. At 4am they sent forward two platoons to try to recover a foot bridge over the canal a little north of it flank which had been abandoned by other troops, but the enemy’s fire was too heavy.

Peter Marshall
Guardsman Peter Marshall, 2nd Battalion Scots Guards, Denny & Dunipace, The Battalion had been in the line at Montmirail Farm with HQ in Cannes Farm. From the 8 to 10 October, the Battalion was in rest at Wellington Camp near Elverdinghe were they provided working parties for the Royal Engineers in the forward areas. There was a great deal of shelling and this resulted in a number of casualties.

Rifleman Patrick McAteer, ‘D’ Company 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, Denny & Dunipace, The Battalion were in billets at the Ramparts, Ypres preparing to move into the line at Westhoek Ridge. During the move the Germans put down a heavy barrage which caused a number of casualties.

James Kelly
Private James Kelly, 8th Battalion Queens Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), On the 14 May the Battalion were in the Infantry Barracks in Ypres as Brigade Reserve. On the evening of the 14/15 May they relieved the 8th Yorks & Lancs with 13 officers and 230 other ranks left in the transport lines. On the 16 May work parties were attached to the 2nd Canadian Tunnelling Company and the 129th Field Company Royal Engineers.

John Fotheringham Kay
Driver John Fotheringham Kay, ‘C’ Battery, 159th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, Denny & Dunipace, The Battery had taken up position 1,000 yards west of Tenbrielen and was firing in support of the infantry advance on the outskirts of Werviq. The War Dairy records that one other rank was wounded.

Lawrence Heenan
Private Laurence Heenan, 10th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Denny & Dunipace, The 10th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders was in the line at The Bluff and a 4am on 15 October the Germans blew a mine under the old crater in trench 29. Although the front line trenches had been cleared in view of the known existence of enemy mines the explosion caused heavy casualties in the support and communication trenches with 15 killed and 50 wounded.

Private James Fraser, 2nd Battalion Royal Scots, Denny & Dunipace, The 2nd Battalion Royal Scots had begun the month of December quietly. They were to become involved in one of the last actions of the year of any importance on the northern front.

Alexander Clark Forbes
Private Alexander Clark Forbes, 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, Denny & Dunipace, The Battalion were occupying the trenches in front of Maedelstede Farm, a sector they had been in and out of since 1914. The War Diary records that two prisoners had surrendered to the Battalion on their right and that they had indicated that a German gas attack was imminent.

James Braidwood Fergus
Private James Braidwood Fergus, 4/5th Battalion Black Watch, Denny & Dunipace, The 4/5th Battalion Black Watch were in the dugouts at Canal Bank opposite La Brique and were under irregular artillery fire from the Germans. In the period 1 to 9 August the War Diary reported 19 casualties from shell fire and on the 9 August there was two hours of shelling from 5.9’s. As James is buried at Brandhoek it seems likely that he was wounded and was taken down the line to the Casualty

James Easton
Private James Easton, Machine Gun Corps, Denny & Dunipace, The 4th Division were involved in the attack on Eagle Trench, the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. The 11th Machine Gun Company were providing machine gun barrage support. The Company War Diary records that the Germans opened a barrage at 5.45am that grew in intensity so that by 6.00am it was extremely heavy in the vicinity of White House and White Trench.

Joseph Dyer
Private Joseph Dyer, 8th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, 44th Infantry Brigade, Denny & Dunipace, The right assaulting company of the Seaforths mistook the Steenbeke stream for the Zonnebeke brook, and lost direction. There is no confirmation of this as no survivor ever came back all being killed or seriously wounded. It does appear that the company reached a point well to the east of Beck House before they were annihilated by fire from machine guns in the house behind them.

James Comrie
Private James Comrie, 1/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, The Battalion War Diary records that they had been in the line on the 4 and 5 August in the trenches north of the Wulverghem - Messines Road with battalion HQ in St Quentin Cabaret. On the 4 August the Germans shelled the Battalion trenches with trench mortars.
