Prisoners of War: The Forgotten Heroes
It is estimated that between 7 to 9 million prisoners of war were taken in the First World War. In ‘Black Bread and Barbed Wire,’ Michael Moynihan puts the British Prisoners of War at 6,482 officers and 163,907 other ranks. The official British statistics for all theatres including all services put the numbers at 192,848.

Repatriation: Falkirk District Man
There were 199 men repatriated from Falkirk District. One of them was Private Thomas Burt, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, who had been wounded, his knee cap shattered and badly wounded in the chest and taken prisoner at Loos. He had been in a German hospital and then a prison camp for twelve months before being repatriated via Switzerland.

Ruhleben Internment Camp
There were 175 prison camps in Germany during the First World War. Only one – Ruhleben – was built exclusively for civilian internees. The camp was located two miles west of Berlin and was an improvised camp built on a racecourse, it covered no more that ten acres and the prisoners could walk end to end in ten minutes. A Lucky Escape from Internment. The Experience of Falkirk District Civilians
On the 30 July 1914, Provost Nisbet of Denny, a town in Falkirk District, was on holiday with his wife and daughter staying with a relative of his wife in Wittenberg a town thirty miles south-west of Berlin. Private George Miller
Private George Miller, King's Own Scottish Borderers, Bainsford, PoW, He was taken prisoner at Kemmel in April 1918 during the German spring offensive and was held at a PoW holding camp in Halluin near Menin. PoWs from this camp were part of the 29th German PoW labour battalion (KAB 29) and they were guarded by a Bavarian unit while they worked in the German 4th Army area.
