Grahame Hardie Wade
Captain Grahame Hardie Wade, 1/7th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Larbert, He was educated at Falkirk High School and Royal High School, Edinburgh and the University of Edinburgh and was a prizeman in Scots Law and Conveyancing. After completing his legal training with Falkirk law firm Russel & Aitken he was made a partner in the legal firm of Logie and Fischer of St Vincent Place, Glasgow.

John Taylor
Private John Taylor, 1/4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, 150th Infantry Brigade, 50th Division, Larbert. He was an apprentice shoemaker with the Larbert Co-operative Society and was employed by the Carstairs Cooperative Society when he attested in Stenhousemuir in February 1916. Posted initially to the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots and then to the Royal Scots Labour Battalion. He was later transferred to the 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment.

Alfred William Spicksley
Sergeant Alfred William Spicksley, 2nd Battalion Border Regiment, Larbert, A regular, he had seen service in the Boer War and in India. As part of the 7th Division, the Battalion went to Belgium in August 1914 landing at Zeebrugge as part of British force sent to defend the fortress at Antwerp. Retreating from Antwerp with the Belgian Army, the 7th Division formed part of the BEF in front of Ypres in October 1914.

Private James Shirra, 9th Battalion Scottish Rifles (Cameronians), Larbert, Before enlisting he was employed as a bricklayer by J.J.P McLachlan of Larbert. He enlisted in the early days of the war in the 11th Hussars but was transferred to the Cameronians

Thomas Penman
Cpl Thomas Penman, 11th Battalion Royal Scots, Larbert, Battalion were in the line at Ploegsteert Wood, known to the Tommies as ’Plugstreet’, on the southern edge of the Ypres Salient and they were in this sector until the end of May 1916. They occupied the trenches at Le Gheer opposite a German strong point known as the ‘Birdcage’.

John Laverie
L/Cpl John Laverie, 1st Battalion, Queens Own Cameron Highlanders Larbert. He was employed by Babcock and Wilcox in Glasgow before he enlisted in August 1914. His two brothers, were also serving in the army. Joseph, 2nd Battalion, Black Watch, received a shell wound to both thighs on 19 May 1915 and on recovery was transferred to the Labour Corps. Andrew Reid Adam Johnston
Private Andrew Reid Adam Johnston, 10th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Larbert. Before enlisting in November 1914 he was employed as a moulder at Dobbie, Forbes & Company, Larbert. He had been with his Battalion on the Western Front since April 1916, except for a few months when he was invalided home with enteric fever.

Donald Jenkins
Private Donald Jenkins (Also known as Daniel), 10th Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Larbert. He was employed as a moulder by Jones & Campbell Foundry, Larbert before enlisting in May 1915. He landed in France on 12 October 1915. His three brothers also served, two of whom were discharged as a result of wounds received. He died of wounds received, a gunshot wound to the right thigh resulting in the amputation of his leg.

William Haire
Private William Haire, 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers, Larbert. Husband of Janet Kirkbride Haire, Larbert. They had one son born in 1915. William was employed as a miner in Plean near Bannockburn. His wife remarried Robert Bruce on 13 December 1916. Alexander Esslemont
Private Alexander Esslemont, 1/6th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, Larbert. He was employed as a gratefitter with Dobbie, Forbes & Company, Larbert. He was also an active member of the Boys Brigade Company, he was a drummer in the pipe band, attached to Larbert (Old) Parish Church. His brother Thomas was serving with the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.

Private Ross Dalgety, 12th Battalion, Royal Scots, Larbert. He was employed as a clerk with James Jones & Sons sawmillers. On his attestation form Ross is categorised as a ‘Group B’ man. Men who attested under the Derby Scheme, who were accepted for service and chose to defer it were classified as being in “Class A”. Those who agreed to immediate service were “Class B”.

Lieutenant John George Sherriff, 1/7th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, Larbert. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Larbert Company of the 7th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in 1913. His younger brother, Lieutenant Alexander Nimmo Sherriff, 1st Battalion, Northampton Regiment, age 20, was killed in action on 30 October 1914 and is listed on the Menin Gate Memorial. His other younger brother Christopher was also commissioned.

Frederick Smith Rae
Private Frederick Smith Rae, 1st Battalion Scots Guards, Larbert. Frederick was employed as an apprentice gardener before he enlisted in October 1915. Frederick was unmarried and his mother is listed as his ’dependent’ on his n records. He died of wounds.

Charles Maitland
Private Charles Maitland, 43rd (Cameron Highlanders of Canada) Battalion, Larbert. Husband of Janet Maitland, Stewartfield Place, Larbert. Son of John & Marjorie Maitland, Castlehill, Larbert. He was employed as a ticket collector at Larbert station before he emigrated to Canada in 1912. Before enlisting on 28 December 1915 he was employed as Clerk in the Bank of Canada.

Peter McCann
Private Peter McCann, ‘X’ Company, 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, Larbert. At the end of the Second Battle of Ypres, the German trenches between the Menin Road and the Ypres-Roulers Railway formed a salient. Positioned on Bellewaarde Ridge the Germans overlooked the greater part of the ground east of Ypres. In early June a plan was out in place to take back the Ridge with the attack being carried out by 9th Brigade, 3rd Division with 7th Brigade in support.
