This WW1 Tour is a rewarding walking tour of Ieper (Ypres) battlefields and is a circular route that takes in all eleven cemeteries located in and to the west of Vlamertinghe of the Ieper (Ypres) Salient World War I. It is designed for free independent historians like myself, or enthusiasts of the Ieper (Ypres Salient) who like to explore and are not interested in being led to the usual suspects of an organised tour.

The WW1 battlefield here had a suburbia of camps, Casualty Clearing Stations, Field Ambulances, dumps for stores and ammunition, and tramway railways. This Ieper (Ypres) battlefields guide to the eleven cemeteries will take you a full day to complete however, if you are pressed for time you may wish to use your car or your bike. Directions to each cemetery are contained in the link for each cemetery I have also put this screen grab map here showing the cemeteries which are highlighted in green.

Cemeteries

There are a number of men from Falkirk District who are buried in the cemeteries that are visited and links to their bio's are contained in each cemetery link. The full list of men from Falkirk District who are buried or commemorated in the Ypres Salient can be viewed by town or village here Roll of Honour  In addition to the men from Falkirk District there are Victoria Cross holders, an ex-Marathon Champion of Scotland, Canadians, Australians, Aliases, Boy Soldiers, Artillery men, Cavalry units, Shot at Dawn, connections to Talbot House, Belgian civilians, the uncle of a British spy, and more.

Suggested route

As I stay at Talbot House in Poperinge I start my walk or cycle from there and my first cemetery is Gwalia Cemetery and then/Canada Farm/Hospital Farm/Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery/Vlamertinghe New Military Cemetery/Hop Store/Brandhoek cemeteries/Red Farm/Hagle Dump. It is entirely up to you the order in which you visit the cemeteries. Why not dip in and out of the list.

The Camps and Hospitals

For information on the suburbia of camps in the rear area of the Ieper (Ypres) Salient follow link. You can also read more about the Evacuation and Treatment of Wounded

Iron Harvest

In this area of the Ieper (Ypres) Salient you should not come into contact with the iron harvest. However, a word of warning, if you find unexploded munitions please leave them well alone not just for your own safety but for that of others who maybe in your party. Remember it is illegal to take this type of ‘souvenir’ back to the UK. Take a photo/video and post it on your social media channel instead.
