Family: Son of Margaret and of the late John Monfries. At the time of his death his mother (recipient of a pension gratuity) was living at 5 Brunswick Road, Edinburgh. His father had been a potato merchant and they were living in Falkirk the household employed a maid. He had two sisters Jane and Marion and two brothers James and Hector. Interestingly, the Register of Soldiers Effects lists him as assumed to have died in Germany.
