Alexander Hendrie
Private Alexander Hendrie, 2nd Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. Grangemouth, Falkirk. The 19th Infantry Brigade was engaged in heavy fighting with advancing German troops around Le Maisnil which lay to the south of the Salient around Fromelles. During the fighting the Battalion had 5 Officers and 200 Other Ranks killed, wounded and missing. Alexanders body was subsequently lost and he is listed as one of the missing.

William Robert Hector
Private William Robert Hector, 8th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, Grangemouth, Falkirk. The 15th (Scottish) Division was moved forward to support the attack on Frezenberg Ridge. The attack of the 16th (Irish) Division had stalled in front of the German strong points at Beck House and Borry Farm. On the 17 August 46th Brigade took over the whole of the right sector of V Corps front from the 16th (Irish) Division. This Brigade had occupied this ground a fortnight earlier

Robert Coutts Gray
Private Robert Coutts Gray, 13th Battalion, Royal Scots, Grangemouth, Falkirk. The 22 August found the division preparing for an attack on the German positions at Frezenberg Ridge. The attack was launched on 22 August at 4.45am under the cover of a creeping barrage and fire from thirty-two machine guns. The Germans very quickly replied with counter fire and with heavy machine gun fire which met the assaulting battalions of the 45th Brigades

Edward Gilbert
Corporal Edward Gilbert, ‘A’ Company,1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, Grangemouth, Falkirk. Edward’s wife Ann, they had married on 15 April 1908, died on 21 June 1912 leaving Edward to care for their daughter Mary. Following Edward’s death his daughter was placed in the guardianship of his mother Mary. He was a reservist who rejoined his Regiment on 5 August 1914. On 6 March The Battalion was in the line at Vierstraat when he was wounded.

Peter Drummond
Private Peter Drummond, 1st Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers, Grangemouth, Falkirk. The 1911 Census shows him living at home, at that time 3 Grange Lane, with his father Peter who was a widower. Peter junior was employed as a Rivet Boy in the local shipyard in Grangemouth. His two brothers and two sisters also lived in Grangemouth. Peter was living in Gravesend when he enlisted. Interestingly, in his entry in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Roll he is named as ‘Peth’

Thomas Dennistoun M.M.
Serjeant Thomas Dennistoun M.M., 13th Battalion, Royal Scots, Grangemouth, Falkirk. Thomas was employed as a grocer before he enlisted age 18 on the 25 November 1915. The 13th Royal Scots, as part of 45 Infantry Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division, were involved in the assault on the German lines at Frezenberg Ridge. The task of 15th Division was to seize the ridge near Frezenberg and then to push on to a rise to the north east of Frezenberg known as Hill 35.

Peter Campbell
Guardsman Peter Campbell, 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards, Grangemouth, Falkirk. He was married to Jane and they had four children. Peter was an iron moulder in a Falkirk iron foundry before he reenlisted on 22 August in Stirling. He landed in France on 22 September 1914 as a reinforcement and was sent up the line on 12 November. The 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards, along with the rest of the Brigade, had moved south marching through Bailleul and Steenwerck and over the River Lys.

Henry Brock
Sergeant Henry Brock, 4th Battalion, Gordon Highlanders, Grangemouth, Falkirk. Son of Henry and Isabella Brock, 82 Forth Street, Grangemouth. He had three brothers and a sister. He was a clerk with P and J Wilkie, timber merchants, before he enlisted at the age of 17 just after the outbreak of the war. He was also an enthusiastic member of the 1st Grangemouth Company of the Boys Brigade, as well as being a member of Kerse Church Choir.

William Balfour
Private William Balfour, 2/2nd Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), Grangemouth, Falkirk. William enlisted in Grangemouth formerly in the Army Service Corps. On the 20 December the battalion moved from their billets at Bridge Camp near Elverdinghe and relieved the 2/1 Battalion, London Regiment in the line at Poelcappelle with two companies at Pheasant Trench and battalion HQ at Kempton Park.
