Family history: Son the late Mr and Mrs Joseph Fowler, Leicester Terrace, Dennyloanhead. Husband of Matilda Fowler, 16 Rose Street, Carlton, Glasgow. They had four children. Following his death his wife moved to Glasgow. Prior to enlisting he was employed as a miner by the Banknock Coal Company.

The action leading to his death

On the night of the 1/2 December, the 25th Brigade was assembling for the assault on the Southern Redoubt, Passchendaele and during the assembly the 25th Machine Gun Company incurred the following casualties Officers wounded 2, Other Ranks killed 4 and 10 wounded.
