Family history: Son of William and the late Elizabeth Marr, Mossview Cottage, Dennyloanhead. He had seven brothers and three sisters. Prior to enlisting on 28 January 1915, he was employed as a Grocer.

The action leading to his death

On the 9th May the battalion was occupying the trenches on the edge of Zouave Wood. The 10 May saw ‘B’ Company moving to the left of the battalion position to repel a German break-in to the British trenches and to restore the situation. On the 11 and 12 May their positions were shelled intermittently throughout both days. The War Diary reports one officer casualty.
