The action leading to his death
The 246th company was formed in Grantham and joined the 19th Division at Bailleul on the19th July 1917. On the 31 July the 19th Division were in their assembly positions at Ravine Wood opposite the village of Hollebeke for the opening of the Third Battle of Ypres.

The 246th Machine Gun company was providing fire support. The Division were consolidating their positions around Junction Buildings on 1 August the War Diary of the 246th MGC is sparse on information. The Divisional history mentions that enemy snipers were very active. One can only conclude that William was a victim of these snipers.
