Date of Death: 25.4.15
Family history: Husband of Barbara and father to Robert, Janet and Alexander. They lived at 21 Alma Bank, Grahamston, Falkirk. Before he enlisted in the Territorials at the outbreak of the war he was employed as a moulder. In his spare time he also worked at the Electric Theatre in Falkirk. He had two brothers both of whom were also serving, Private Kenneth Bell, 8th Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and Private Richard Bell, King’s Own Scottish Borderers, who had been wounded in action earlier in the war. Interestingly, his late father had received the Long Service Medal as member of the Falkirk Company of Volunteers.
The action leading to his death
The 25 April 1915, is a day that brought catastrophe to 7th Battalion Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and to the towns and villages of Falkirk District. The 7th Battalion were seen as Falkirk District’s Battalion. The men were all serving Territorials, work mates and friends.
