Family history: He was born in Bonnybridge and lived with his wife and three children Joseph, William, and Charles, at Main Street, Cumbernauld. He enlisted in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders in Denny.

 

Action leading to his death

The Battalion was in the line in front of Ypres and on 7 September they under took a patrol in which they took seven prisoners from the 27th Bavarian Regiment. The trenches were subjected to artillery fire in the evening. The casualties were recorded as one Officer wounded, two Other Ranks killed, one died of wounds, five wounded, and one missing. Joseph is recorded as dying of his wounds.
