Family history: Son of John and Margaret Kilpatrick, 545 Brown Terrace, Carron Road, Bainsford, Falkirk. He had two brothers and four sisters. Before he enlisted in September 1914, he was employed as an assistant bath moulder at the Carron Iron Works.
