Family history: Son of Lawrence and Jane Greenhill, of Woodlands Cottage, Parkfoot, Falkirk. His father was a Superintendent of Police in the Stirlingshire Police, now Police Scotland. Alexander was employed as a clerk at Carron Iron Company before he enlisted in January 1915 joining the Army Service Corps and then transferred to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers on the 12 December 1917. His elder brother. Lawrence, was serving with RAMC on a hospital ship.
The action leading to his death
The battalion was at Hill Top Farm were it was engaged in providing working parties for work on the front line and in salvage work between 21 to 29 December. During this time Alexander sustained a shell a shell wound to his back and shoulder and subsequently died from this would at the Casualty Clearing Station at Mendinghem.
